Visioneer —
A vendor of document scanners that specializes in workgroup, departmental, and low-volume production models. Visioneer has a brand licensing agreement with Xerox and markets its scanners under the Xerox DocuMate brand name. Visioneer is known for its patented OneTouch technology, which enables users to launch a scanning process through pressing a button on the scanner. Visioneer has embedded Kofax’s VRS technology within the OneTouch driver.

In 2007, Visioneer signed a strategic development agreement with Böwe Bell+Howell Scanners.

Visioneer was launched in 1992 as a vendor of desktop document image management software. Visioneer’s original PaperMax product line became the PaperPort application that was eventually sold to ScanSoft in 1999. As an avenue to seed the market with PaperPort, Visioneer launched a mobile line of document scanners. It eventually expanded into flatbed scanners and leveraging its OneTouch technology became a market leader. In 2002, Visioneer began positioning itself as a serious player in the document scanning space and in 2004 made a splash with a pair of exciting workgroup entries the DocuMate 252 and 262.

JFL Peripheral Solutions — An Ottawa-based TWAIN development specialist that was acquired by Visioneer in 2005. Jon Harju, currently the senior VP of engineering for Visioneer, is the founder of JFL and still runs the organization.

Products/Technologies:

OneTouch — A patented method for scanning that enables users to press a button on their scanner’s control panel and launch a scanning process that ends with the automatic launching of an application on the PC connected to the scanner. The application, such as a desktop image management system, will typically enable the user to view the image. The OneTouch patent was approved in 1999 and awarded to ScanSoft, which has since changed its name to Nuance Communications.

Xerox DocuMate — The primary brand name, licensed by Visioneer from Xerox starting in 2003, under which Visioneer markets its document scanners.

People:

Larry Smart — President, CEO, and Chariman of Visioneer and primary shareholder who purchased the company from Primax. Primax had acquired the Visioneer hardware business in a 1998-1999 deal that saw Visioneer acquire ScanSoft and spin-off its hardware business. From 1997-1999, Smart was President and CEO of Visioneer before the aforementioned deal was completed. Smart is the former President and CEO of Maxtor. In 2008, he was appointed president and CEO once again, after the retirement of Murray Dennis.

Murray Dennis — Dennis was president and CEO of Visioneer from 1999-2008, when he retired from the company. He joined the company in 1996 as VP of Sales and took over marketing responsibilities in 1997. His tenure as CEO saw the company transition from a vendor of primarily consumer scanners to an important player in the document imaging space.

Jon Harju — Also known as “Mr. TWAIN,” Harju founded of J.F.L. Peripherals Solutions, which specializes in TWAIN drivers, in 1996. In 2005, scanner vendor Visioneer acquired J.F.L. The company continues to operate as an independent developer of TWAIN technology, while also doing development work for Visioneer. Harju is the Senior VP of Engineering at Visioneer. He works out of the J.F.L. offices in Ottawa, Ontario. Harju began working with document scanning and TWAIN drivers while with Corel, prior to founding J.F.L.
