IBM — The Amonk, NY-based global technology conglomerate was one of the first major vendors in the document imaging market with its ImagePlus application. IBM followed up with its OnDemand high-volume cold application. IBM eventually merged its imaging products into its IBM DB2 Content Management series of applications. In 2006, IBM acquired high-volume imaging and workflow specialist FileNet for $1.6 billion.

Products/Technologies

FileNet — One of the pioneers in the document imaging industry, FileNet was founded in 1982 by former Basic Four mini-computer executive Ted Smith in Costa Mesa, CA. Smith was looking for a way to leverage recently developed optical disk storage technology and settled on document imaging as the most attractive option. FileNet quickly determined the automated workflow went hand-in-hand with providing return on investment for imaging installations and the company’s direction was set. Before being acquired by long-time competitor IBM in 2006, FileNet had grown to more than $400 million in annual revenue.
